I have been collecting sports cards for seemingly my entire life. I remember opening packs and packs of 1991 Donruss cards hoping to get all of the stars of that era. Little did I know that pretty much all of the cards that I collected when I was young are virtually worthless due to massive overproduction.
Back in the 2000s when I was a late teen/early 20-something, I was buying old store inventory on eBay (back when eBay was a good place to buy and sell!) using every dime I had. I would go through those collections, piece them out and resell some, and keep some.
I always love the chase, and the work involved when buying large collections. I feel that I have gotten very good at determining the overall value of large quantities of cards. I am confident that I make fair offers, and from what I have been told- my offers are hard to beat. I feel like this is true for two reasons:
- I have been selling cards online, at shows and privately for better than two decades, so I have a large network of buyers. I can move through cards that many other dealers won’t even bother with.
- I am fair. If I see a high value card while going through boxes and boxes of “junk” cards, I will call it out- and add to my offer accordingly. I have had situations where sellers tell me “I’ll take $500” and after looking at the cards, I have doubled that amount. I believe in karma and treating people right, and I believe it shows in my reviews.
This is what I do for a living- I don’t have a shop, employees or store-front. So my overhead is low and therefore, I can make very competitive offers.
My main goal with every interaction is to have a pleasant, respectful tone through the end- even if we don’t make a deal. On the rare occasion that I come out, and a deal isn’t done, I even offer to help put the cards back into the attic, closet, or wherever they were. I’m never going to get frustrated or rude- it’s just cards after all!
